It's all part of the game if you park at city meters, you're likely to get a ticket sooner or later, and lately, it's been happening more often than usual.
The Chicago Tribune reports that crews are in overdrive writing tickets at meters. City officials told the newspaper that parking meter tickets are up 13 percent this year, with a total of more than 161,000 issued. Fines for the tickets could top $8 million.
At the same time,
many drivers are frustrated with the new private company running the meters, and the company's new rules that have driven hourly parking costs up and done away with free parking on Sundays and holidays.
But there is good news. The Tribune also reports that for car owners who have challenged a meter ticket this year, there is a 72 percent change that the ticket will be dismissed.
The fine for parking at an expired meter is $50.
