On the first night of towing during the
new winter parking ban, 234 vehicles were snagged. CBS 2's Mike Parker has the story of one man's ordeal.
He's Michael Chatman. He woke up to find that his small Mitsubishi sedan had been towed away in the pre-dawn hours. But that was only the beginning.
He says the car's hood was dented when the vehicle was taken away from in front of his home at Central Avenue and Kamerling. In addition, Chatman says one of his windshield wipers is missing.
"I don't mind paying for the (tow) but don't tear my car up too, in the process," he says.
He says the police wrote up a report about his claims that his car was damaged.
Willie Chatman, his brother, says the car was in good shape.
"He had just gotten it out of the repair shop. There were no dents, no scratches," Willie said.
Michael Chatman is not optimistic he'll be reimbursed for the damage. He admits he simply forgot about the start of the annual parking ban on 107 miles of arterial streets in the city.
Mayor Daley says the major streets must be cleared.
If they're not, Daley says, "You run into major problems and the first problem would be, 'Mayor Daley, why'd you screw up?'"
The city says an even bigger fleet of tow trucks will hit the streets on Wednesday morning. The ban continues until April 1st.
