Park District Asks Staffers To Take Unpaid Days
District Wants To Avert Layoffs In Budget Crisis
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
The Chicago Park District is the latest public organization that is asking its employees to make sacrifices due to a difficult budget.
The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday that the Park District is asking its employees to take unpaid days off in order to avoid layoffs.
Workers are being asked to take as many as 16 unpaid days off between now and the end of 2010.
The Park District says it could be forced to lay off as many as 400 people if the measure is not taken.
Park District Supt. Tim Mitchell told the Tribune that while property tax revenues are stable, corporate income tax revenues could drop $15 million from projections. The district has an budget of $400 million for 2009.
