Radar Problem Delays Flights At O'Hare

Many Flights Delayed About 20 Minutes

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A radar problem that caused 20-minute delays to some inbound and outbound flights at O'Hare International Airport has been corrected, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

At 11:05 a.m. the FAA experienced a problem with data communications between the primary ASR-9 radar and the tower at O'Hare, which caused them switch to the secondary radar system at Tinley Park, according to an FAA release.

By 12:05 p.m., the primary ASR-9 radar was back up and running normally, according to the release.

O'Hare Airport experienced some arrival delays and the FAA hopes to catch up to the regular schedule as soon as possible, the release said.

Midway through the problem, at 11:30 a.m., some inbound and outbound flights at O'Hare were experiencing delays of about 20 minutes, according to City Dept. of Aviation spokesman Gregg Cunningham.

When the problem started, the FAA said they adjusted the arrival rate at O'Hare from 96 aircraft per hour to 72, the release said.

The cause of the problem is being investigated.
