Off-Duty Police Officer Fatally Shoots Robber

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― An off-duty Chicago police officer fatally shot a man who allegedly tried to rob him at gunpoint in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side on Tuesday morning.

An armed offender approached the off-duty officer at 11:16 a.m. on the 6200 block of South Honore Street, according to police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien. The man displayed a weapon in an apparent robbery attempt.

Sherrod Griffin, 44, of 6101 S. Whipple St., died at the Stein Institute at 1:55 p.m., a Cook County Medical Examiner's office spokesman said.

Independent Police Review Authority spokesman Mark Payne said the man was shot about 11:40 a.m.

A weapon supposedly belonging to the robber was immediately recovered at the scene.

The officer was not injured, according to O'Brien.

IPRA was gathering evidence on the incident early Tuesday afternoon, Payne said.
