Police, Prosecutors Want Pardon For Officer
Michael Mette Convicted Of Assaulting College Student In Iowa; Says It Was Self-Defense

Officer Mike Mette, here in uniform, says he was only defending himself when he punched a college student in Iowa in 2005.
Police and prosecutors in Illinois are asking Iowa Gov. Chet Culver to pardon a Chicago officer sentenced to five years in prison for hitting a college student.
No one disputes that Michael Mette punched Jake Gothard -- fracturing his nose, cheek and jaw during an October 2005 altercation in Dubuque.
But his supporters say he only struck after Gothard pushed him three times.
Mette was found guilty of assault in November 2006 although the judge says he wasn't the initial aggressor.
Now, Cook County State's Attorney Richard Devine, Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis and others are seeking a pardon. Culver's office says the governor doesn't comment on ongoing legal proceedings.
Mette has appealed, and arguments before the Iowa Supreme Court are scheduled next month.
