Auto Deal: Buy One Car, Get Second For A Buck
Mancari's Chrysler-Jeep Tries Promotion To Fuel Sales
OAK LAWN, Ill. (STNG) ―
Buy one at full price, get the second for a buck.
It's a tried-and-true retailing promotion, but an Oak Lawn auto dealer is trying it at a time when dealerships are desperate to get customers into their showrooms.
Customers who pay the sticker price of a new Pacifica sport utility vehicle at Mancari's Chrysler-Jeep, 4630 W. 95th St. in Oak Lawn, will get a slightly used PT Cruiser for $1.
The promotion began Saturday and was to have ended Monday but will likely be extended, owner Frank Mancari said. He started out with five Pacificas and expects to deplete his supply within a day or two.
"Maybe with the way the economy is, you need a car for your wife or kid but don't want to pay for two cars," Mancari said. "Everybody is looking for a bargain."
He said his Pacificas are only at the Oak Lawn store, but a customer visiting his Orland Hills dealership can get the same deal.
The fully loaded Pacifica has a sticker price of more than $39,000. The PT Cruisers are 2008 models and have about 10,000 miles on them, Ed Tapper, a manager with the Oak Lawn dealership, said.
He said some of the PT Cruisers were rental vehicles or were driven by Chrysler employees. They would normally retail for about $12,000 or $13,000.
While Mancari said he's losing money on the deal, it has brought him plenty of publicity. Might he consider trying it with other models?
"Who knows?" he said.
