2 New Year's Fireworks Displays At Navy Pier

Also, Penny Rides Available On CTA

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Two fireworks displays are scheduled at Navy Pier this New Year's Eve, and revelers are reminded that riding the CTA home will only cost a penny.

Navy Pier officials say they expect about 10,000 people for a 15-minute fireworks show along Lake Michigan at midnight after a free concert by DJ Madrid Thursday evening. Officials say Navy Pier will host an earlier fireworks display at 8:15 p.m. for families and children.

There also will be free entertainment for kids starting at 6 p.m., including a youth dance ensemble and live music.

Whether you choose Navy Pier, a swanky nightclub, a neighborhood bar or an old friend's house to celebrate New Year's, getting back without a car won't be a problem.

The Chicago Transit Authority and Metra will provide additional service on New Year's Eve, and between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., a ride on a bus or 'L' train will only cost a penny.

On the Brown, Green, Orange and Pink lines, trains will serve Loop L stations every seven to 12 minutes until 1:30 a.m. Friday, the CTA said.

Blue Line trains will operate every 15 minutes from 1:30 a.m. until 5 a.m. Friday, according to the CTA. Red Line trains will operate every 10 minutes from 12:01 a.m. until 6 a.m. Friday.

On the Purple and Yellow lines, trains will operate from the Howard station and serve stations until 2 a.m. Friday, according to the CTA. Purple Line trains will operate every 10 to 12 minutes. Yellow Line trains will operate every 15 minutes.

In addition, Miller Lite beer is offering free rides on double-decker buses, in an effort to prevent drunken driving and keep the streets safe. The buses will run on a looped route New Year's Eve with stops in the Loop, River North, the Near North Side, Old Town, Lincoln Park, and Wrigleyville.
