Man Feared Lost in Floodwaters

Authorities Search For New Lenox Man By Land and Air

NEW LENOX, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Emergency crews are searching by land and air Sunday night for a man who went missing from floodwaters in southwest suburban New Lenox, authorities said.

New Lenox Village Trustee Annette Bowden said police lost contact with man who became trapped along a stretch of Hickory Creek.

The New Lenox Fire Department requested divers near Elm Street and North Cedar Road about 6:15 p.m., according to the Lockport Fire Protection District, which sent divers to assist.

Neighbor Jen Smith reportedly called 911 about 4:30 p.m. to report high floodwaters. She said a police squad car arrived about 5:30 p.m. because someone was stuck in the rising water.

Smith said the man couldn't be seen, but could be heard mumbling, gargling and taking in water in the woody area.

"The creek has completely consumed the area," Smith said.

Police arrived with a canoe, which immediately tipped, Smith said. She then reportedly called 911 again and asked the dispatcher to send someone with a boat.

At 7 p.m., investigators were trying to determine if the man got sucked under the water or just moved further downstream, Bowden said.

The New Lenox police and fire departments, as well as emergency crews from other suburbs, were searching for the man Sunday night on the ground and with helicopters, Bowden said.

New Lenox police and fire officials were not immediately available for comment.
