Woman, Boyfriend Die In Apparent Murder-Suicide
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A woman was fatally shot, allegedly by her boyfriend, Sunday night in the West Town neighborhood. The man then fatally shot himself on the South Side lakeshore in an apparent suicide.
The woman killed was Mercedes McCauley, 22, of 935 E. Kane St. in Hammond, Ind., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. McCauley was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 9:10 p.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner's office, which said McCauley was shot at 756 N. Green St.
About 8:40 p.m., the woman was shot in the 800 block of North Green Street, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said. McCauley was shot while sitting in a 2000 Mercedes with another person.
The suspect, a man, pulled up in a four-door 2007 Chevrolet and opened fire before fleeing the scene, according to police News Affairs Officer David Banks.
The woman was initially taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to Fire Media Affairs.
About an hour later at 59th Street and Lake Michigan, the boyfriend of the woman, who is suspected of shooting her, shot himself in the chest and then threw the weapon into the water, according to Grand Crossing District police Lt. Timothy Bickham. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he died.
A man in his 30s who was shot at 5800 S. Lake Shore Drive, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:24 p.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner's office.
Police learned the man shot was a suspect in the woman's shooting when the father of the woman, who was at the hospital, overheard someone saying the man's name.
"He [father] said, 'where did you come up with that name, that's the guy that shot my daughter,'" Bickham said.
After shooting himself, the man called his sister, who notified police. The weapon, a .45 caliber pistol, was recovered by the police Marine Unit, the lieutenant said.
"He was sitting on the rocks and he shot himself,'' according to Bickham, who said the man was distraught.
The man told police on the scene he had thrown the weapon in the lake.
"I was diving and I was guided by a line [rope],'' according to police Marine Unit Officer Joseph Smith, who recovered the weapon.
"We started from the wall and moved out,'' Smith said. "[The pistol] was roughly about 15-20 feet out,'' said Smith, who said the weapon was found on the bottom of the lake. Smith is a 10 1⁄2 year veteran of the police force.
Calumet Area police detectives do not know why the man, 35, allegedly shot the woman.
Harrison Area and Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
