Murder Charge Filed In CTA Bus Shooting

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A Chicago man was charged Thursday with the fatal shooting of a high school student aboard a CTA bus -- one day after he surrendered at a South Side church, authorities said.

Milton Wardlaw, 24, of the 7200 block od South University, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle for shooting Kiyanna Salter while she was riding the No. 71 bus with with her cousin last Sunday on the South Side, prosecutors said.

Salter's family spent part of Thursday planning a funeral to celebrate her life. They also expressed thanks to the family of Wardlaw, who turned himself in after an anguished plea from his mother.

"I'm glad they put it out there like they did,'' Sonja Nelson-Wilcox said. "I know it was hard but sometimes you have to show tough love in order for these kids to do right. By her showing tough love, he did the right thing.''

Salter's shooting was captured on security cameras mounted in the bus. Detectives released a photo of Wardlaw in the hours after the shooting, which prompted his mother to make her plea.

Salter was a senior at Julian High School who loved fashion design and basketball. She and her 18-year-old cousin were on the bus at 71st and Cottage Grove, on their way home from visiting a sick aunt, when the shooting happened.

Jasmine Wilcox, the cousin, said Salter was shot after two passengers got into a minor altercation.

Wardlaw, of the 7100 block of South University, is scheduled to appear Friday in bond court.
