1 Dead, 2 Injured In 8-Vehicle Crash In Monee

MONEE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A Harvey man was killed and two others were injured, one critically, in an eight-vehicle crash Friday night in south suburban Monee Friday.

Cristobal Murillo, 23, of Harvey, was the driver of a vehicle in a crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 57 in Monee, according to the Will County Coroner's office.

Illinois State Police Joliet District Master Sgt. Bill Fuentes said the accident happened at 8:02 p.m. about a half mile south of the Monee Manhattan Road exit (mile marker 334.5). Murillo was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:22 p.m., authorities said.

A total of eight vehicles, including a semi truck, were involved in the crash, Illinois State Police Joliet District Trooper Jeff Liskh said. Preliminary reports that the semi failed to observe a traffic stop could not be confirmed.

A second male was critically injured in the crash and airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Liskh said. Another person was taken to St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Olympia Fields with minor injuries.

Interstate 57 was closed to northbound traffic until early Saturday morning, Fuentes said. All northbound traffic was diverted off I-57 at the Wilmington Peotone Road exit (mile marker 327). From there, it continued east to Illinois Route 50, then north on 50 to either Monee Manhattan Road or north to Sauk Trail, then west to I-57.

Fuentes said citations would be issued, but further details were not available.

The cause and manner of Murillo's death is pending an autopsy, toxicology results and a police report, according to the coroner's office.
