Emergency Crews Search Lake Michigan For Boater
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
The U.S. Coast Guard continues to search for a boater who remains missing in Lake Michigan off Promontory Point on the South Side. The Chicago Police called off their search overnight, but continued searching early Monday.
Police responded to a report of a missing boater off 55th Street at 10:34 p.m., according to the police Marine Unit.
Four people jumped into the water for a swim, but only three returned to the boat, which was about one-half to three-quarters of a mile from shore, according to police News Affairs, which said the man went missing near 5491 S. Lake Shore Dr.
Other police sources indicate the people on the boat reported one person did not return from swimming, but later said the missing person fell out of the boat during a turn.
The Chicago Police called off their search for the night at about 12:15 a.m., according to police Marine Unit Officer Hitney. However, the search was set to resume at daybreak Monday, Kubiak said.
A police Marine Unit officer said there is one boat out continuing the search as of 6:35 a.m.
The U.S. Coast Guard continued to search for the missing person throughout the night.
