Aurora Man With Autism Found Safe In Crest Hill

Russell Sims Was Last Seen Leaving Family's Home Sunday Afternoon

CREST HILL, Ill. (CBS) ― A 22-year-old Aurora man with autism has been found safe in southwest suburban Crest Hill one day after he went missing.

Crest Hill police said Russell Sims was found safe and sound Monday morning. Sims had been missing from his family's home in Aurora since Sunday afternoon.

Crest Hill police said they found Sims wandering around the southwest suburb Monday morning, about 20 miles from his Aurora home.

Police found the man safely about 9 a.m. Monday in Crest Hill, according to Crest Hill Police Deputy Chief Bradley Hertzmann.

"He was found wandering around town and we picked him up,"Hertzmann said. "He is expected to be picked up by Aurora police and will be reunited with his family."

He did not appear to be injured and did not require any medical attention, Hertzmann said.

Officials said Russell Sims was upset with his family and left his home in the 2000 block of West Illinois Avenue on foot on Sunday.

Police said Sims could hear but is unable to speak. Police and canine officers from several jurisdictions assisted with the search.

Crest Hill is located about 20 miles from Aurora, according to a Web directory. It was unclear Monday morning how Sims traveled to Crest Hill.
