Chicago Officer Freed From Iowa Prison

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ― A Chicago police officer has been released from an Iowa prison a day after state prosecutors decided not to seek a Supreme Court review of his case.

Michael Mette was released from the prison in Rockwell City shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Last week, the Iowa Court of Appeals found that a district court judge erred in ruling Mette could have retreated from an October 9th, 2005 altercation in Dubuque. The appeals court ordered he be acquitted of assault causing serious injury, which had landed him a five-year sentence.

Mette maintained throughout the case that he hit Jake Gothard in self-defense.

The 31-year-old served about a year of the sentence.

A welcome home party is planned at a Chicago Fraternal Order of Police hall Sunday.
