Busiest Day Of The Year At Midway Airport

Busiest Day For O'Hare Comes Sunday

CHICAGO (CBS) ― If you're heading to Midway International Airport on Tuesday, you'll be in plenty of good company.

This is the busiest day of the year at Midway, with more than 64,000 travelers expected to pass through the airport, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

The busiest day at O'Hare International Airport will be Sunday, with nearly 233,000 passengers going to and from their destinations.

To pass the time, travelers at both airports will be treated to live musical entertainment between 2 and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, featuring holiday-themed jazz, classical, blues and international selections. The Radio City Rockettes will also appear at O'Hare on Wednesday.

The Chicago Airport System's cell phone parking lots enable motorists to temporarily park free of charge until friends, family members or business associates have deplaned, collected baggage and are ready to be picked up curbside, the release said.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is opening "Family Lanes" at each security checkpoint at O'Hare this holiday season to provide a better screening experience for families and individuals with medically necessary liquids. These lanes allow families, individuals unfamiliar with air travel procedures, and travelers with special needs to go through security at their own pace, according to the release.

At Midway, the TSA operates its "Diamond Self-Select" program, featuring separate lanes for Expert, Casual and Family travelers.

Because so many people chose to drive or cancel their vacation altogether, airfares are also falling. Flights are not full, so the airlines slashed their airfares about 25 percent for the holidays – bad news for people who purchased their tickets about a month ago.
