Officer Michael Mette Says He Was Acting In Self-Defense During Fight

CHICAGO (AP) ― Attorneys for a Chicago Police officer serving a prison sentence in Iowa are asking that state's Court of Appeals to reverse his conviction and dismiss the charge against him.

Officer Michael Mette was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of assault causing serious injuries. The charges stem from a 2005 fight in which Mette punched Dubuque student Jake Gothard, who suffered a broken nose, cheek and jaw.

Attorney Mark McCormick argued Thursday that Mette was acting in self defense when he punched Gothard, who was drunk and had pushed the officer.

Prosecutors say Mette had other options, such as walking away or calling police.
