Trains, Buses Extend Hours For Obama Rally
Metra Changes Schedule For Election Day Festivities
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
The CTA will provide additional service and extend the hours of select bus and rail routes to accommodate people attending election night events downtown, including Barack Obama's Grant Park rally.
The CTA is also warning riders that bicycles will not be allowed on the rail system after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4 until 4 a.m. Wednesday.
The following bus routes will leave the downtown area until 2 a.m. on election night: No. 3 King Drive, No. 4 Cottage Grove, No. 6 Jackson Park Express, No. 12 Roosevelt, No. 14 Jeffery Express, No. 126 Jackson, No. 146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express, and No. 147 Outer Drive Express. The later service is in addition to 10 bus routes that already offer late-night service.
Following the rally, northbound customers who will catch the bus between Van Buren and Randolph on Dearborn should head over to LaSalle to board the following buses: No. 22 Clark, No. 36, Broadway, No. 146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express, No. 147 Outer Drive Express, and No. 151 Sheridan.
Southbound customers exiting and boarding between Clark and Van Buren should head over to Clark to board the following buses: No. 2 Hyde Park Express, No. 3 King Drive, No. 4 Cottage Grove, No. 6 Jackson Park Express, No. 14 Jeffery Express, No. 20 Madison, No. 26 South Shore Express, No. 28 Stony Island Express, No. 29 State, No. 62 Archer.
Westbound No. 20 Madison buses will be located between Dearborn and Clark.
According to the CTA, there will be increased service for several rail lines.
Immediately following the rally, Brown, Pink, Green and Orange Line trains will be extended to service the Loop until 2 a.m.
Blue, Red, Orange and Brown Line trains will continue to run eight-car trains throughout the evening.
Purple and Yellow Line trains will operate from Howard until 2 a.m.
Metra is changing its regular weekday schedule to accommodate customers leaving work early on Election Day and those leaving Barack Obama's Grant Park rally in the late-night hours.
An early rush hour schedule, similar to schedules on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve, will be put into place in anticipation of the increased number of downtown employees who will leave work early to avoid the increased activity downtown on Tuesday, Nov. 4, Metra said.
Metra will also augment its outbound late-night service between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. to accommodate attendees letting out from the Obama rally.
Riders should be aware that some normal evening rush hour trains would not operate, Metra said.
Due to heightened security, Metra is banning all alcoholic beverages and glass containers on all trains on Election Day.
