Suspicious Package Prompts Evacuation Of Metra
BERWYN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Metra riders heading between Aurora and Chicago on Wednesday evening are finding their commute longer than usual after a suspicious package found on a train prompted an evacuation at a west suburban station.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe train No. 1268, which was scheduled to arrived at Union Station at 3:42 p.m., arrived more than an hour late after the unexpected delay in Berwyn, according to Metra spokesman Tom Miller.
"A suspicious package found on the train. Crew members found it unattended and when no one claimed it, they don't take any chances," Miller said.
The train was evacuated as Berwyn police investigated the package, which was found to contain "nothing of concern," Miller said.
But the delay led to the train arriving in Chicago more than an hour late, he said. Train No. 9421, scheduled to arrive in Aurora at 4:56p.m., was stopped near CIcero during the evacuation and is currently running more than 65 minutes late, according to Metra's Web site.
Other trains inbound to Union Station and outbound to Aurora are also experiencing delays of 10 to 35 minutes.
