Metra to Raise Fares Despite Transit Solution
CHICAGO (AP) ―
Metra says it'll still raise fares by ten percent February 1 even though state legislators gave tentative approval to a sales tax increase to help bail out mass transit.
Without a mass-transit funding solution, Metra had threatened to raise fares 30 percent over the next three years as a way to balance it's budget.
While the 2009 and 2010 increases appear to be off the table for now, Metra decided Friday to go ahead with the ten percent increase to help replenish its depleted coffers.
Metra fares vary by distance. But riders who have been paying $105.30 for a monthly ticket from Chicago to certain suburbs, for instance, would have to pay $116.10 starting February 1.
The General Assembly is expected to vote this coming week on a final version of the mass transit bill.
