Bond was set at $250,000 Wednesday morning for the prime suspects in the killing of a respected Hammond couple.
Reo Jonta Thompson, 17, and Gregory Brooks Jr., 18, both of Hammond, are charged in connection with the murder of Milton McClendon, 78, and his wife Ruby, 76, the parents of CLTV talk show host Garrard McClendon.
The couple was found shot to death in Calumet City last week.
Thompson and Brooks are currently charged with robbery, burglary, confinement and auto theft. If they're convicted of those crimes they could be sent to prison for more than 100 years.
Still, as of now, they're not charged with murder.
The pair was arrested on Friday of last week, and they were transferred late Tuesday from the Cook County Jail to a lock-up in Crown Point, Ind. Neither suspect had anything to say about the McClendon murders.
On Wednesday in court, one of the McClendons' sons spoke after hearing he believes ion the process and the good that may come out of the horrific crime.
"They are the unsung heroes, that now their story is being lauded. I'm happy about that, certainly," said Theorore McClendon, "and if academia wants to get involved in how to be a proper parent, we can tell them what our parents did."
Witnesses told police they saw the two suspects attempting to sell property stolen from the couple's home at pawn shops in the days after the killings, sources have said. The teens also were spotted at several other businesses in northwest Indiana riding in the victims' car, a source said Saturday.
