Man Held In Fatal Shooting Of Teen On South Side
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A man is in police custody for apparently accidentally fatally shooting his 17-year-old friend at a block party where another man was injured early Sunday on the Far South Side in a gang-related incident.
Killed was Marlow Jones, of 11945 S. LaSalle St., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, who said Jones was pronounced dead on the scene at 12005 S. Lafayette Ave. at 5:48 a.m. Sunday. An autopsy later Sunday determined Jones died of a gunshot wound of the face and his death was ruled a homicide.
Jones and the other man, in his 30s, were standing on the street in the 12000 block of South Lafayette Avenue about 1:30 a.m. when the shooting occurred, according to police News Affairs reports.
Prior to the shooting, Jones had allegedly been attending a memorial party held Saturday to celebrate the birthday of a man who had been fatally shot three years ago near the intersection of West 120th Street and South Wentworth Avenue, according to a police source.
Jones had left the memorial party and went to a nearby block party at the Lafayette Avenue address when the man in his 30s, who was not a friend of anyone at the block party, came walking over and began to start trouble.
The alleged shooter -- a man at the block party who was a friend of Jones -- became angry with the man in his 30s and hit him in the face with the gun, chipping his tooth and cutting his forehead. In the process, the weapon apparently accidentally fired, striking and killing Jones, according to the source.
The man in his 30s suffered a wound to the head and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in "stable" condition.
The suspect, 26, who apparently accidentally shot Jones turned himself in to police but has not been charged yet as of 6:30 a.m. It was possible the man may be charged with involuntary manslaughter, according to the source.
The man in his 30s was not expected to be charged with anything in the incident, to which there were approximately 100 witnesses.
The argument that led up to the shooting was possibly gang related.
Calumet Area detectives are investigating.
