3 Students To Play In All-American Marching Band

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Three students from a south suburban high school are headed for a bowl game. They will be "playing" on the field in an all-star band made up of students from across the country. CBS 2's Jim Williams reports that the talent of three young men put them in very rare company.

Dan Klipper, Keith Jennings and Chris Karlin are all seniors at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights. All three have been chosen for the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.

"Three from one school is a rarity," said Josh Wein, Sportslink. "We don't have too many schools that have multiple winners. It speaks a lot to their band program and these three individuals as well."

More than 1,000 student musicians from across the country wanted to be a part of the band, which will perform at a high school all star football game this January in San Antonio.

Fewer than 10 percent were selected.

Dan, Keith and Chris will be among 97 high school musicians to play in San Antonio. For them, it is the equivalent of making an All-American football team.

"It just means a lot to represent everyone in the United States who plays an instrument," said Chris Karlin, band member. "And to be selected as one of the 97, it makes me feel real special inside."

On Monday, they received a standing ovation from their fellow students.

"You guys inspire me every day," said Dan Klipper. "You're the reason why I come here - to see you guys every day. It's great."

The hard work has paid off. The times they missed playing video games or hanging out with friends so they could practice their instruments.

"It was a big sacrifice," said Keith Jennings, Matteson. "I wanted to join my friends playing sports but I felt the saxophone was where I needed to be."

In January, they will be in front of a national television audience making all of Marian Catholic High School proud. The three high school students are members of the marching band, which has received national recognition.
