Man Charged With Poisoning Mother As A 'Joke'
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
An 18-year-old man has been charged with a Class X felony for allegedly poisoning his mother with anti-freeze.
Michael Tangney Jr., of 381 Northgate Road, allegedly poured anti-freeze into a coffee maker knowing his mother, Joyce Tangney, would ingest the coffee, according to a news release from Chief Jack McKeever of Lindenhurst Police. He was charged with heinous battery -- a Class X felony.
Police said the mother and son were in an argument and the mother was poisoned sometime last week.
Sources say she was the only person to drink coffee in the home, which includes an 8-year-old sibling.
On Monday afternoon, 40-year-old Joyce Tangney was transported in critical condition to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with symptoms of vomiting with blood and stomach pains, police said.
Police began their investigation and searched the family home and vehicle after the victim's husband, and the suspect's father, told police Tuesday the medical staff indicated a possibility of poisoning.
Michael Tangney Jr. was questioned and eventually confessed to doing it as a "joke," according to a source who said police had answered to disturbances in the home in the past. Tangney Jr. told police the bottle of anti-freeze is in his car.
