Malcolm X College Evacuated After Threat Found
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Malcolm X College on Chicago's West Side has been evacuated after a written threat was found on campus.
Chicago police explosives experts and their bomb-sniffing dogs raced to the West Side campus late Monday morning. A threatening message found inside a bathroom stall had prompted the action, along with the evacuation of some 900 students who were attending classes.
"He went directly to one of our security aides and he informed the aide that he saw a disturbing message," said the college's Interim President Ghingo Brooks. "We can't say what the message said."
The threat read "be ready to die on 4-14 till the end," a source said. A similar threat forced the closing of St. Xavier University on the South Side and at Oakland University near Detroit.
After an inspection by Chicago Police and Malcolm X security, the decision was made to resume classes, starting with those scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to a release from the school.
"Of course with everything that's going on in the world, of course it's a concern," said student Yolanda Stewart.
Malcolm X students are advised to allow extra time in arriving for classes Monday evening, since they will be subject to security checks, the release said. Both students and faculty must wear their school identification for admittance.
