'Love Triangle' Murder Suspect Held On No Bond

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A man charged with murder for a slaying earlier this month on the South Side that was reportedly sparked by a "love triangle" was ordered held without bond Wednesday.

Demetrius McCafferty, 20, 5809 S. Shields Ave., appeared for a bond hearing Wednesday in front of Judge Israel Desierto, who ordered him held with no bond. He is charged with one count of first-degree murder, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said.

McCafferty turned himself in to police with his attorney at 6 a.m. Monday, according to a source.

He is accused of fatally shooting Sylvester Porch, 19, at a South Side apartment building on Aug. 17 over a "love triangle."

About 11:30 p.m., residents in an apartment building at 638 W. Garfield Blvd. heard a disturbance and found Porch shot and lying on the floor of the hallway, police said.

Porch, of 7325 S. King Dr., was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 12:17 a.m. on Aug. 18. An autopsy the next day determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

McCafferty was allegedly Porch's ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, according to a source, who said Porch arrived at an apartment where the woman was and began fighting with the new boyfriend.

During the altercation, Porch was shot inside the apartment unit and ran out into the hallway, where he collapsed on the floor.

No one else was hurt in the incident and the gunman fled afterwards.

McCafferty is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 15 at noon in Violence Court (Br. 66), 2600 S. California Ave.
