Another plea to stop the violence came Friday night from the Nation of Islam's Louis Farrakhan. He made a rare public appearance, speaking at St. Sabina Church on the South Side.
Farrakhan very recently underwent serious surgery for cancer, but CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports he was as sharp and flamboyant as ever. He spoke before the church to urge people of all religions to unite against evil.
The 73-year-old Farrakhan's return to the church he visited many times before, seemingly as animated and energetic as ever, fulfilled a promise he'd made to its pastor, Father Michael Pfleger.
Earlier this year, Farrakhan said his time was up, but it sure didn't look like it Friday night.
His message to the tremendously active and observant Roman Catholic parish was about how religion should bring people together, rather than drive them apart.
"When we come out in the street and you meet a Christian or you meet a Jew or you meet somebody who's practicing obedience to God, you're really meeting your brother," Farrakhan said.
His final thoughts in the hour-long address were about violence.
"Three men come into a bank the other day, shoot down a young father, beautiful-looking young man. Somebody gets on a bus and shoots down a beautiful young man. Where is the kingdom of God?" he said. "With churches on every corner, preachers everywhere, but death and destruction has taken over our community."
