Man's Jump From Loop Building Prompts Bomb Scare
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Police investigating the apparent suicide of a man who jumped from a Loop building Friday afternoon found what appeared to be explosives inside his apartment.
That discovery lead to an investigation by the police Bomb and Arson Section, as well as a SWAT team, according to police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.
Police had initially responded to a report of a man that had jumped from either the 19th or 20th floor of a building in the 100 block of East Lake Street at 4:48 p.m., police said.
When police responded, some sort of device was found in the man's apartment, Greer said. Upon further investigation, police discovered there were no explosives.
The man died in an apparent suicide, Greer said.
Charles Riencke, 40, of 151 N. Michigan Ave., was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:30 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.
