Teen's Older Brother Charged In Shooting Death
Jose Caballero Described As 'Preppy' Student Who Stayed Out Of Trouble
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
The brother of a 16-year-old boy fatally shot during a domestic incident in his Logan Square home early Wednesday on the Northwest Side has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Victor Caballero, 19, of 2700 block of North Fairfield, was charged Wednesday evening with one count each of involuntary manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, according to police News Affairs.
He is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing at noon Thursday in Violence Court (Br. 66).
As CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports, Jose Caballero was found fatally shot in his family home, where he lived with his parents and three siblings.

Tracking Summer Shootings In ChicagoA neighbor said she heard shots coming from the second floor of the two-flat building around 3 a.m.
Later Wednesday morning, police searched the roof of Brentano Academy, an elementary school at 2723 N. Fairfield Ave. across the street from the Caballeros' home. Friends say Jose Caballero once attended that school, but Chicago Public Schools spokesman Mike Vaughn says Caballero is not a student in the CPS system anymore.
The custodial staff at Brentano arrived at 6:30 a.m., and saw police collecting evidence on the roof. Police asked the custodians if the surveillance cameras were working, which they are not.
One witness, Clarence Williams, said he saw police put a man in a squad car and take him away.
"Someone was up there when they arrested him, because they had him in the back seat. They were looking for evidence, but they were just up there taking pictures and everything," Williams said. "That's just about what happened."
A friend of Caballero said he was a good student who stayed out of trouble.
"Jose was never gang-affiliated," Lisbethe Avilas. "He was a preppy boy, a school boy, an A-B student. He stayed home; a homeboy, playing soccer a regular kid."
Police said the shooting is definitely not gang-related. It is not known if the person taken away from the Brentano school roof is a witness or a person of interest in the shooting, or related to the shooting at all.
