Suburban Police Mourn Death Of Police Dog

Died From Cancer After 8 Years Of Service

NILES, Ill. (AP) ― Police officers in the Chicago suburb of Niles are mourning the death of a crime-fighting dog named Noah.

In honor of the yellow Labrador retriever, they are wearing black bands of mourning on their badges this month. Flags are at half staff and purple and black bunting is hanging outside the entrance to the police station.

Noah was a member of the Niles Police Department's canine unit for eight and a half years before he was diagnosed with cancer.

Noah was one of two police dogs in Niles that helped find narcotics, catch criminals and track missing persons.

The town's police chief says in Niles, canines are treated like officers. He says even though Noah didn't die in the line of duty, the dogs have saved officers' lives and are true partners to their handlers.
