'UFOs' Dangle From Indiana Power Lines

Objects Have Residents Talking

HEBRON, Ind. (Post-Tribune) ― The truth is out there, but not everyone in Hebron, Ind., is in a hurry to hear it. Instead, residents are happy simply spinning yarns about the UFOs dangling in the power lines just north of town.

"Everybody in town's talking about it," said Mary Flangin, a bartender at the Old Heritage Inn.

There are actually three of them, shiny and futuristic, appearing to hover silently above Indiana 2. Of course, they don't really hover. They hang from the power lines. But they have people in the small town south of Valparaiso scratching their heads.

Victoria Grimmer, a waitress, listened to customers banter about the enigma over breakfast Wednesday. "They don't know what it was," Grimmer said.

Hebron Police Chief Steven Sibbrell said his department has also taken some calls from people wondering what was going on. "We got a few, not a bunch," Sibbrell said. "People asking what they were."

Flangin said she didn't know what they were when she first saw them. She said she was driving north on Indiana 2 with her husband and spotted them in the sky.

She and her husband agreed, she said: They looked like UFOs. "That's exactly what we said about it as we were driving down the road," added Frances Liffick, a front cook at the Inn.

Neither Flangin nor anyone she knows has called the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. to find out what's really hanging there.

Flangin said it's more fun to wonder. "I never even thought to call," Flangin said.

The truth, said NIPSCO communications manager Tom Cuddy, is that the shiny metal objects are simply weights installed to keep the lines balanced and to prevent sagging.

Sounds pretty practical. But not nearly as exciting as a UFO.
