Lincoln Park High-Rise Fire Leaves One Hurt
Fire Was Likely Caused By Burning Candle
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A 22-year-old woman suffered injuries in an overnight fire at a Lincoln Park neighborhood high-rise fire.
The fire was reported to the Fire Department at 10:40 p.m., and was contained to an apartment on the sixth floor of a building at 444 W. St. James Pl., according to Fire Media Chief Kevin MacGregor.
Firefighters say smoke detectors in the apartment and on that floor were not working, and the 12-story building had to be evacuated.
A burning candle was likely the cause of the fire, officials said.
One resident heard the woman's cries inside the apartment, and went to rescue her.
"i heard her screaming for help," resident Steve Remke said. "I checked the door; the door was locked. I proceeded to kick it in, and as soon as I kicked it in, black smoke came pouring out. And she came running out. She was all black, covered in black smoke."
The injured woman was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in fair condition with injuries in smoke inhalation.
MacGregor said the building was made up of studio rental apartments.
St. James Place is between Diversey Parkway and Fullerton Avenue, and it runs for one block from Clark Street to Lake View Avenue, which is the boundary of the park of Lincoln Park.
