DOLTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
The body of a woman was recovered Friday afternoon after a passerby saw her floating in a creek off the Little Calumet River in south suburban Dolton.
About 11:15 a.m., Dolton police contacted the Dolton Fire Department to report a possible body in a branch of the Little Calumet near the intersection of West Sibley Boulevard (Route 83) and Wentworth Avenue, according to Fire Chief Jerry McCullough.
About 1 p.m., emergency crews recovered a deceased woman who appeared to be white and between the ages of 22 and 28. She was tall and fully clothed, with no obvious signs of trauma to the body, the chief said.
The woman's feet had gotten stuck in the mud and she had been floating in the middle of the creek, which is only about 3 feet deep, though it gets deeper as it flows north towards the Little Calumet, he said.
McCullough did not know how long the body had been in the water and said a woman who was walking past notified police of the body.
The body will be taken to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, he said.
"It's an ongoing investigation to determine how she died,'' the chief said.
