Man Dies After Falling In Lake Michigan
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
A 50-year-old man rescued by divers Tuesday evening after falling into Lake Michigan near the Southeast Side has died.
The man has been identified as Julius Collins, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a man in the water about 5:30 p.m. near 67th Street and Promontory Drive, Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight said.
Chicago Fire Department divers Wally Gorzen and Joseph Gallagher leapt from a helicopter into the water and found the man about 25 feet from the shore, Knight said.
The man was with another person when he slipped into the water, according to Grand Crossing Dist. Capt. Kenneth Johnson, who said the fall was an accident.
"They called for the rescue units right away and were able to pull him out of the water," Johnson said. "They tried to revive him but it was just too late."
The man spent about 10 minutes underwater, Knight said.
He was initially taken to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition.
