Jewelry Dealer Stabbed, Seriously Hurt Near O'Hare

Police: Attackers Were Professional Jewelry Thieves

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A jewelry salesman visiting Chicago to sell merchandise is recovering at an area hospital Friday morning from injuries suffered after being stabbed in an apparent robbery attempt in west suburban Schiller Park.

As CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports, the jeweler underwent surgery at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, after suffering stab wounds that were apparently serious.

Police said the robbery happened in front of several witnesses around 5:45 p.m. Thursday night in Schiller Park.

The man parked his car outside the Hampton Inn at 3939 N. Mannheim Rd. a short distance south of O'Hare International Airport, and began to walk in with two suitcases. Police said he had more than $1 million in jewelry, including $500,000 worth of diamonds.

Three or four men took the suitcases, and one slashed the jewelry dealer in the wrists, police said.

Police said the jewelry dealer was from Florida and had spent the day showing the merchandise to jewelers in the retail district around Oak Street and Michigan Avenue.

It is believed that the robbers are professional jewel thieves.

Police said the attackers fled in a 1990s model silver sedan on which the license plate was covered up.

The victim's identity has not been released, and authorities say he lost a significant amount of blood. Anyone with information is asked to call Schiller Park police at (847) 678-4794.
