Victim Of Infamous Police Beating Going To Jail

Jeremiah Mearday Gets 4 Years For Violating Probation

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A Maywood man beaten by Chicago Police detectives in 1997 is going to jail for four years for violating his parole in an unrelated case.

Jeremiah Mearday, 29, pleaded guilty two years ago to selling crack cocaine in DuPage County. He was sentenced to six months in jail and two years of probation at the time.

But has now reportedly failed a drug test and missed a meeting with his parole officer, and thus will be incarcerated again. He was ordered Monday to begin serving his sentence later this month.

Mearday says police beat him up in September 1997 when they questioned him about the shooting of a police officer. The complaint ignited community protests.

The officers were fired, but the city didn't admit liability in the case.

In October 2005, Mearday received a $1.75 million settlement from the alleged beating.
