Hudson's Nephew Still Missing After Murders

Mother, Brother Fatally Shot Inside Englewood Home

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Jennifer Hudson, one of Chicago's brightest new stars, is back home Saturday morning dealing with a tragedy. Hudson's mother and brother were murdered Friday at their home on the city's south side - and her nephew is still missing.

Hudson's mother, Darnell Hudson Donerson, and brother Jason Hudson, were found shot to death in her mother's Englewood home as police continue a massive search for Hudson's missing nephew.

"There was no sign of forced entry," said Deputy Chief Joseph Patterson, Chicago Police Department. "We don't know if anything was taken in the house."

William Balfour, Hudson's brother-in-law, was brought in for interviews by police Friday night, but there was no sign of the Academy Award winning actress's nephew, 7-year-old Julian King. The five-foot tall, 135-pound child is the subject of an Amber alert.

Police said the boy might have been in the company of Balfour. In 1998, Balfour was sentenced to seven years in prison for attempted murder.

"It really saddens me cause they were actually good people," said neighbor Vanessa Stanton.

Police say shots were heard between 8 and 9 a.m. Friday morning by neighbors, but the bodies weren't found for at least six more hours by Jennifer Hudson's sister Julia. Julia is married to Balfour, but the two had been fighting recently over a car and Balfour's possible unauthorized sale of that vehicle.

Police are not saying anything about a possible motive. Friends and loved ones are mourning the loss of a movie star's mother and brother while hoping that no harm has come her young nephew.

"As Jennifer would say they are in my prayers at this time," said family friend Daniel Simpson. "I am hoping for the best."

Balfour has a lengthy criminal record including a conviction for attempted murder. He was sentenced to seven years in prison back in 1998.

The Amber Alert for the missing boy is still in effect. Anyone who has seen a white Chevy Suburban with Illinois license plate X584859 is asked to call police immediately.
