Gary, Ind. Mayor Rudy Clay said a team planning a museum to honor late pop star and Gary native Michael Jackson agreed Monday to seek historical status for the Midtown neighborhood where Jackson grew up.
The rest of the details, the mayor said, still need to be worked out.
"We've got a lot of homework to do," Clay said.
The project was the subject of a City Hall meeting Monday that went "exceptionally well," Clay said.
Community Development Director Jacquelyn Drago-Hunter will be responsible for seeking historical status for the area around 2300 Jackson St. A successful application could mean new federal money will be available for the neighborhood.
A museum honoring Jackson and his family's band, the Jackson 5, has long been considered in Gary. City officials visited the Jackson family's home in California in 1995 to try and make a Jackson museum a reality.
Enthusiasm for the project has surged since Jackson's death on June 25, though, outgrowing a potential site north of Interstate 80/94 along Grant Street. That site was touted last year when Michael Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, visited Gary to promote the museum idea.
Last week, Clay told the Post-Tribune the site is too small, as the project now includes a hotel.
"It's a go to make it happen," Clay said Friday.
