1 Dead, 4 Hurt In West Side Crash

Police: 2 Victims Flee From Scene

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A boy is dead and four other people -- including two other boys -- remain hospitalized after a Jeep and a van fleeing an armed robbery collided early Friday on the city's West Side.

A Jeep Cherokee and van collided about 3:30 a.m. at California Avenue and Jackson Boulevard, police said. The crash caused the Jeep to overturn and burst into flames, police said.

A boy inside the Jeep was killed and four others from the Jeep were injured and remain hospitalized, including two in critical condition, police said.

The van was fleeing an armed robbery that its occupants had allegedly committed prior to the crash, according to police. No one inside the Jeep was considered a suspect.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death of a male juvenile, but was not releasing further information pending notification of family.

Two boys -- 13 and 14 -- who were inside the Jeep remained hospitalized as of 10 a.m. with non-life-threatening injuries at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to police, who said the other two were at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, both in critical condition as of late Friday morning.

Two of the four in the Jeep may have taken themselves to the hospital and Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight said two were taken to Stroger Hospital and Mount Sinai.

Two people inside the van sought safety and were found -- possibly with burns -- about a block away at 2711 W. Jackson Boulevard, police said.

Police have at least one suspect in custody but the van driver, who fled the scene, was is not in custody as of 11 a.m. Friday.

For some time after the crash, Jackson Boulevard was closed between California and Washtenaw avenues as crews cleaned up.
