Mayor's Press Secretary Furious Over News Reports

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Jackie Heard, Mayor Richard M. Daley's press secretary, unexpectedly got in front of the microphone during a news conference on education Tuesday, and essentially let certain members of the media have it.

Heard was upset about reports that accused her renting an apartment to drug dealers. Heard and her husband own a building at 5319 W. Adams St. on the city's West Side that was targeted as a drug and gang house in a raid by Chicago Police Narcotics officers back in May.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported last week that a female tenant had rented an apartment in the building after Heard and her husband, Henry Bassett, bought it and renovated it.

"It is so ludicrous and unfair that I do not believe it, and then three days later, they print on the bottom page, 19, a total retraction of the story," Heard said. "Where is the fairness in that? There is something wrong and deeply flawed with a system that would allow that."

Heard said the facts speak for themselves. No charges have been filed against Heard or her husband. In fact, later reports say she followed city ordinance and had the woman move out, and obtained an eviction notice.
