An extra-alarm fire that burned through the roof of a rehabilitation business on the Northwest Side on Friday morning in the Portage Park neighborhood was controlled with no injuries.
The started about 8:30 a.m. in a one-story commercial building at 5820 W. Irving Park Rd. [Vital Rehabilitation Clinics], and was elevated to a 2-11 blaze, Fire Media Affairs Spokesman Richard Rosado.
The 2-11 was controlled with no injuries at 10:25 a.m., according to Fire Media Asst. Director Eve Rodriguez, who said the extra alarm was initially called at 8:45 a.m.
"The fire is [burning] through the roof,'' Rosado earlier said of the blaze.
Rosado said at 9:30 a.m. that about 100 firefighters were using three master water streams and four hand-held water lines to fight the fire, which was still burning.
It was unknown whether the business was open at the time or if anyone was inside.
Irving Park Road was blocked between Central and Austin avenues, according to a Jefferson Park District police officer, who said four police units were on the scene, plus a supervisor.
