Inmate Had Fever Before Inconclusive Death In Jail
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
An autopsy performed Sunday on a man who died at the Cook County Jail Saturday was inconclusive and pending further investigation, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Thomas Beals, 25, an inmate at the Cook County Jail, was pronounced dead at 5:14 p.m. Saturday at Mount Sinai Hospital, a medical examiner's office spokesman said. His listed address was 2950 S. California Ave., which is part of the jail complex.
The cause of Beals' death was "pending further investigation," the office said Sunday.
Cook County Sheriff's Police spokesman Steve Patterson said jail staff first noticed that Beals had a temperature around 9 a.m. Saturday. Beals was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, but doctors there were unable to bring his temperature down and he died at 5:14 p.m., Patterson said.
Beals was facing charges of murder for allegedly strangling his mother, Deborah, at their home in Dolton in March.
He was being held in a psychiatric wing at the County Jail, Patterson said. Jail staff initially quarantined a cell mate and other inmates who'd come into contact with Beals, but doctors later established that whatever made Beals sick wasn't contagious, Patterson said.
It's hoped a toxicology report by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office will shed light on the cause of Beals death, Patterson said.
