Entire Indiana Toll Road Shut Down Due To Ice
Toll Road Called 'Sheet Of Ice;' West End Later Reopened
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ―
Freezing rain across northern Indiana caused authorities to close the full length of the Indiana Toll Road and at least a section of Interstate 65 north of Lafayette early Friday.
State Trooper William Jones said the Toll Road across the state's northern tier from Ohio to Illinois was shut down about 6:30 a.m. Friday after more than 50 wrecks.
The west end of the highway was reopened by 8:25 a.m.
Jones said the full highway would not be open until the sun melts the ice or salt trucks can treat the pavement. In his words, the 157-mile highway is "an entire sheet of ice."
State police were also diverting traffic off Interstate 65 in Jasper County while crews worked to clear several accidents. Highways in Lake County also were gridlocked by slick conditions.
The National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory for much of northern Indiana until 10 a.m. Eastern time Friday.
