Man Charged In Humboldt Park Home Invasion

CHICAGO (CBS) ―

A Chicago man has been charged with home invasion and aggravated robbery in a violent attack in Humboldt Park that left a young boy in critical condition.

Karl Smith, 30, was charged Sunday with one count each of home invasion and aggravated battery of a child and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Smith is accused of taking part in a home invasion in the 4000 block of West Division Street on Friday. A 6-year-old boy was shot and two of his relatives were hurt in the attack.

Police originally reported the boy had died, but they later said he was revived at Mount Sinai Hospital.

One of the boy's relatives was pistol-whipped, and a second adult was shot and stabbed at the four-story apartment building. Another child was found unharmed.

It's unclear if the 6-year-old was shot intentionally or hit by stray gunfire, police said.

One clear target was a safe in the apartment.

"The safe appears to be open and empty. We're not sure what the contents of the safe were, but whatever was in there, it's missing," Grand Central District Cmdr. Juan Rivera said. "I'm not sure if they held the child at gunpoint trying to get the individuals to open the safe. It's all speculation right now. I don't know how it transpired, but it's tragic."

The pistol-whipped man escaped by jumping from a window and dashing across the roof of a neighboring preschool and day-care center, police said.

He burst into Las Americas Food and Liquor a half block away, looking for help. He was bleeding from a gash on the back of his head, said store owner David Ishkirat.

The man told Ishkirat gunmen broke into the apartment to take his cash.
Police suspect the home invasion was a drug-related ripoff, a source said. A small amount of marijuana was found in the apartment, the source said.

The 6-year-old was listed in critical condition Friday at Mount Sinai Hospital. The man who was shot and stabbed was in critical but stable condition, police said.

The STNG Wire contributed to this report.
