CTA Chief Huberman To Run Public Schools
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
CTA President Ron Huberman, an all-purpose mayoral troubleshooter with no background in education, will be appointed Tuesday to run the nation's third largest school system.
Huberman replaces Arne Duncan, newly appointed U.S. education secretary.
Mayor Daley believed Huberman's management experience honed at the Chicago Police Department, the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, the CTA and as the mayor's corruption-fighting chief-of-staff makes him an ideal fit to run the Chicago Public Schools.
At 37, Huberman is one year older than Duncan was in 2001 when he was tapped to fill the big shoes of Paul Vallas. But Duncan at least came from a family that specialized in inner city tutoring. Huberman has no background in education.
Daley's decision to tap Huberman for the schools post leaves a giant void at the CTA. In the nearly two years since he took over from Frank Kruesi, Huberman has made a series of budget cuts, technology and customer service improvements; survived the threat of "doomsday" fare hikes and service cuts with a new labor deal and a Springfield bailout; and raised fares when expenses rose, tax revenues declined and Gov. Blagojevich ordered free rides for seniors.
It was not clear who would be tapped to replace Huberman at the transit agency at a time when CTA Board Chairman Carole Brown is also lobbying to join the Obama Administration.
