Holy Name Cathedral Closed Indefinitely For Repair
Piece Of Ceiling Fell Down Earlier This Month
CHICAGO (AP) ―
Archdiocese officials say Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral will remain closed until structural repairs are completed on the building's 134-year-old wooden ceiling trusses.
A 10-pound piece of the 19th-century wooden decorative ceiling fell 70 feet to the floor on Feb. 12. No one was injured.
Archdiocese spokeswoman Susan Burritt says engineers inspected the ceiling and found the original 1874 wooden trusses need repairs.
Burritt says all Masses will move to the cathedral's parish auditorium. Funeral Masses will be offered in neighboring parishes.
Holy Name Pastor The Reverend Dan Mayall says he hopes the cathedral will reopen in time for the Easter celebration.
