Young Man Dead In Hoffman Estates Shooting

Neighbors Believe The Shooting Wasn't A Random Act

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (CBS) ― Police in northwest suburban Hoffman Estates are investigating the murder of a young man who was shot to death at home.

As CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports, it was a horrible discovery for the family of Joseph Ziegler, 19, who was found inside his home at 380 Payson St. in Hoffman Estates. He was found inside the house with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police were still on the scene as of 11 a.m., but they would not discuss suspects or a motive.

Ziegler was a senior at Schaumburg High School last year. He and his younger sister lived with their father in the Payson Street house for six years.

Ziegler's sister discovered his body around 6 p.m. Thursday evening.

"This is such a tragedy,'' said neighbor Clare Orlandino, "and I guess they still don't know who has done this. I'm sure the neighbors are shook over all of this, and concerned.''

Police canvassed the area, asking neighbors if they had heard or seen anything. Some residents said they got the impression the shooting was not random.

"I could tell that it didn't seem like it was a home invasion or anything like that," said neighbor Sonja Meshcha. "I think it was something a little closer to home."

Residents said the area is very quiet, but in the past they called police to the Ziegler home because of loud parties.

"There's been a lot of activity there, kids coming and going," Orlandino said. "It's just so tragic."

Police would not say if there was forced entry to the home. The Major Case Assistance Team has been working with local police to collect evidence at the scene since Thursday night.

CBS 2's Joanie Lum and the STNG Wire contributed to this report.
