Woman Fatally Struck In Hit-And-Run In Pilsen

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Police have released new details about the description and condition of the car that fatally struck a woman crossing the street in a Tuesday night hit-and-run in the Pilsen community.

Authorities said a Chicago Transit Authority bus struck the woman after a car hit her and fled the scene.

Martha Gonzalez, 36, of 2036 W. Cullerton St., was struck by a vehicle at 1700 S. Halsted St., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, which indicated Gonzalez was dead on the scene.

A northbound car struck Gonzalez about 5:05 p.m. as she attempted to walk west across Halsted Street. Gonzalez was then propelled into the path of a northbound CTA bus behind the car, according to police.

CTA spokeswoman Sheila Gregory said an eastbound No. 18 18th-16th Street bus was behind the car and police were trying to determine whether the bus also struck the person following the initial striking vehicle.

Detectives are looking for a blue or purple, four-door sedan with a chrome, centered-trim grill, according to police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer. The car has damage to the hood on the driver's side near the headlight area. It was last seen going north on Halsted Street.
