5 Injured In South Side Hit-And-Run

A man leaving a party after a fight drives his car into a crowd, injuring five people.

A fight at a South Side party early Monday in the Hamilton Park neighborhood led to a hit-and-run crash that left five people injured. An officer was also injured while trying to break up another fight on the scene.
About 1:30 a.m., a man and a woman were involved in a physical fight at a party in the 6500 block of South Normal Boulevard, according to police News Affairs.
The man left the party in his vehicle and hit five people on the sidewalk as he drove off, police said. Initial reports stated that the man fired shots on the scene, but police said he did not fire a weapon.
A 34-year-old woman was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County with a leg injury, a 59-year-old man was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center with a hip injury, a 34-year old man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with a leg injury, a 36-year-old woman was taken to Mount Sinai with a leg and arm injury and a 32-year-old woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a hip injury.
Police said the offender is an acquaintance of the victims, who were mostly family members.
The driver who fled was not in police custody as of 4 a.m., but police were looking for a red SUV with front passenger side damage.
Police said several people were fighting on the scene when they arrived, and while trying to break up the fight, an officer was struck by an offender.
The offender was taken into custody and the officer was expected to be treated and released from a local hospital, police said.
The relationship between the hit-and-run driver and woman fighting at the party was not immediately known.
Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
