High School Debate Team Has Advice For VP Debate

CHICAGO (CBS) ― The pressure is on Sarah Palin and Joe Biden heading into Thursday night's vice presidential debate. As CBS 2's Susan Carlson reports, a debate team at a South side high school has some advice for them.

Students at John Hope College Prep already have practice debating issues expected to come up tonight.

"If we don't go out after the $700 billion bailout plan, that means the banks will go into bankruptcy," said Theresa Hicks, debate team.

They advise the vice presidential candidates to spend the final hours studying and preparing notes.

"Instead of, not necessarily how to say it or how to present it, but really what to say," said Detrice Roberts, debate team captain.

"Getting all the information that they need together, clearing their thoughts and just taking a moment to calm down," said Aaron McBee, debate team.

They agree Sarah Palin's downfall has been not doing enough research in the past, but the female team members also say Palin has the tougher battle.

"They're probably going to be a little harder on her because she is a female," said Alexis Johnson, debate team.

"She shouldn't feel offended or get emotional about things because that's what they're looking for a female to do," Roberts said.

And they say Joe Biden has his own faults.

"I think Joe Biden has a tendency to talk a little bit too much, too often," McBee said.

"I just want him to be respectful and not cut off Sarah Palin, even though she probably won't have much to say," Johnson said.

Regardless of the outcome, tonight's debate is turning into a major learning tool for these students.

"We're always sort of analyzing and adjusting our approach to debate by analyzing others' approach to debate," said Kurt Hilgendorf, debate team coach. "What can we learn from them."

Of course, the interest isn't limited to students at Hope high school. Tonight's vice presidential debate is expected to be the most watched since 1984, when George Bush went head to head with Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman on the national ticket.

The Hope high school debate team knows what they're talking about. Hope has won the city debate tournament twice in the last eight years.
